What to know
Provenance is the product
Two identical items, one with a verifiable history and one without, are not worth the same. The record is what a resale buyer is actually paying for, and it cannot be assembled retroactively.
It has to start at first sale
A history that begins when somebody decides to resell is a history with a gap exactly where authenticity questions live. The record starts when the item is made or first sold.
The original brand has an interest
Resale that carries provenance keeps a brand tied to items after the first sale and gives it a defense against counterfeits. Resale without it does neither.
