DECIDING HOW
TO SHIP IT.

Being built

Most shipping decisions are made once and then repeated by habit, which is how a brand ends up paying parcel rates for pallet volumes. The decision is a calculation and it changes every time weight, destination or urgency changes.

The break-even moves constantly

The point where parcel stops being cheaper than LTL, and LTL stops being cheaper than a full truck, depends on weight, density, distance and how much handling the goods tolerate. Recalculating per shipment is worth real money and almost nobody does it.

Density decides more than weight

Freight is priced on the space goods occupy as much as their mass. Two shipments of identical weight can differ substantially in cost, and packaging that reduces volume pays for itself faster than negotiating a rate.

The cheapest option is not always the cheapest

A slower mode that misses a receiving window produces a chargeback larger than the freight saved. Cost has to include the consequence of arriving late, which the quote never does.

Status

Orders, shipments, carriers and receipts are recorded today. Automatic mode recommendation from those records is designed and not built, and this page does not describe a recommendation engine that is running.
