HOW GOODS
GET THERE.

Reference

The delivery method is a commercial decision disguised as an operational one. It sets the cost, the speed, who carries the risk in transit and who is responsible when something does not arrive — and it is usually chosen by default rather than decided.

The methods, and what each is actually for

Each suits a different combination of value, volume and urgency. Choosing on price alone reliably produces the wrong one.

  • Parcel — small, frequent, trackable, expensive per unit
  • LTL — pallets sharing a truck; slower, with more handling
  • FTL — a dedicated truck; fastest and least handled once it is full
  • Air — fast and priced by volumetric weight, which is rarely what you expect
  • Ocean — cheapest per unit and measured in weeks, not days

Volumetric weight decides air freight cost

Air freight is charged on the greater of actual and volumetric weight. Light bulky goods are priced on the space they occupy, which is how a shipment that weighs very little produces a bill that does not.

Delivery terms set who bears what

The Incoterm decides where risk and cost pass. Agreeing a price without agreeing a term is agreeing a number without saying what it covers.

The last mile is most of the failure

Long-haul legs are reliable. Failed deliveries, access problems and appointment windows cluster at the end, which is where a delivery is judged.
