PAYING PEOPLE
WHO WORK FOR YOU.

Being built

An operator who grows starts paying other people, and payroll is where a small business first meets serious compliance: withholding, filings, classification and deadlines that carry penalties. It is also where the most consequential mistake in independent commerce lives.

Classification is the expensive mistake

Treating somebody as a contractor who is legally an employee produces back taxes, penalties and interest, assessed against the employer. The tests differ by jurisdiction and none of them care what the contract calls the relationship.

Contractor payments are not payroll

Independent contractors are paid gross and receive an information return at year end. That is a different obligation from payroll withholding, and conflating them causes problems in both directions.

What a commerce protocol should not do

Run payroll. It is a specialist, heavily regulated function with jurisdiction-specific filings, and a commerce platform doing it badly creates liabilities for the operator rather than for itself.

Status

Not built, and deliberately narrow in intent. GRAJ computes and pays operator earnings and records what was paid; connecting that to a payroll provider so the numbers do not have to be retyped is the useful boundary, and it does not exist yet.
